With all students departed for winter break, I worked on applying some labels that had been created by an undergrad intern to some works of art around the library, a project made much easier by the absence of anyone using the library resources and seating! (1 hour) The labels supplied titles, names, and QR codes for further information regarding the work or artist.

Then, I continued work on the SJC labels, this time working to unify all of the separate labels into printable pages in Photoshop. It involved a lot of formatting and sizing in order to make everything fit with enough “bleed” for cutting. (2 hours)

Finally, for a department holiday outing, Dave, Greg, the rest of the digital repository workers (Rose and Karl), and I went out for lunch and then on to visit Omaha’s Joslyn Art Museum, where an exhibit on the original Saint John’s Bible was being held. I got to learn more about the illuminations in the Saint John’s Bible--an important aspect of my education regarding the department’s “Heritage Edition” (a high-quality and limited edition facsimile of the original) of the Saint John’s Bible. Most important to the department, however, was the documentation of a loaned book from the department on display in the exhibit. Creighton had loaned a 14th century illuminated Dutch prayer book for the exhibit, which we learned was extraordinarily rare in that it was written in the vernacular of Old Dutch rather than Latin. Greg took some photographs to be used in the department’s annual report. (4 hours)
